SF Gate - Gay tradition is woven into fabric of Hawai'i [Excerpt]
By Annie Nakao
6/20/02
[Click here for the full article at SFGate.com ...]
I CAN'T REMEMBER exactly when I first heard about the Glades,
but among my 12-year-old chums in Hawaii, the name was cloaked in
an aura of intoxicating mystery.
The Glades was Honolulu's answer to Finocchio's. I used
to gaze at the titillating newspaper ads for it, wondering how these
gorgeous creatures could be men. Of course, I couldn't ask
my parents about it. I never talked to them about mahus either.
Mahus -- or gays -- were right up there with Martians in our middle-school
minds.
I grew up and left the islands. The Glades, like so much of my
island life, became part of another time. I didn't think about
it again until last year, when San Francisco hula master Patrick
Makuakāne regaled the audience at his annual dance program with
tales of his Uncle Emile.
Performance with Cyndi Lauper

Several of Nā Lei Hulu's dancers performed "True Colors" during
Cyndi Lauper's show at Club Universe, San Francisco, on May 25,
2002. The performance was followed by Ms. Lauper's dance version
of "True Colors." Director/Kumu Patrick Makuakāne created this piece
in 1997 to honor his eccentric and well-loved Uncle Emile.
Nā Lei Hulu Featured Spot on KQED
Nā Lei Hulu's signature piece, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco,"
is currently airing on KQED TV (Channel 9 in San Francisco).
Local Hero Award from KQED

Patrick Makuakāne was given a Local Hero Award from KQED TV in
San Francisco and Union Bank of California. This award is given
annually to five distinguished Asian American/Pacific Islanders
who have contributed to their community and have improved the quality
of life throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. The awards
are part of KQED's programming for Asian Pacific American Heritage
Month during the month of May 2001.
Irvine Fellowship

Kumu Hula Patrick Makuakāne has been selected to receive a prestigious
two-year Fellowship through Dance USA/The James Irvine Foundation.
The Irvine Fellowships in Dance supports artistic development in
the dance field in California. Grants were awarded on a competitive
basis, and eight California-based dance artists were selected from
a total of 101 applicants to receive a $30,000 grant. The Fellows
were chosen based on their significant artistic accomplishments
in the dance field and their vision and goals for the fellowship
period.
Mr. Makuakāne will study with several cultural experts in Hawai'i
to deepen his knowledge of Hawaiian history and tradition, and to
strengthen his foundation in hula. This includes Kumu Hula John
Keola Lake, Kumu Hula Aunty Mae Klein, and Lucia Tarallo Jensen.
He will also work with a chosen team of technical directors and
designers to enhance his skills in theatrical production.
