they never imagined.

SF Gate - Gay tradition is woven into fabric of Hawai'i [Excerpt]
By Annie Nakao
6/20/02
[Click here for the full article at SFGate.com ...]
I CAN'T REMEMBER exactly when I first heard about the Glades, but
among my 12-year-old chums in Hawaii, the name was cloaked in an aura of
intoxicating mystery.
The Glades was Honolulu's answer to Finocchio's. I used to gaze
at the titillating newspaper ads for it, wondering how these gorgeous
creatures could be men. Of course, I couldn't ask my parents about
it. I never talked to them about mahus either. Mahus -- or
gays -- were right up there with Martians in our middle-school minds.
I grew up and left the islands. The Glades, like so much of my island
life, became part of another time. I didn't think about it again
until last year, when San Francisco hula master Patrick Makuakāne
regaled the audience at his annual dance program with tales of his Uncle
Emile.
AAA Sponsorship for 2002

The California State Automobile Association has provided a generous
sponsorship of $5,000 for The Hula Show 2002. This is the second year

San Francisco. Na Lei Hulu would like to thank Patty Nishimura Dingle
and AAA for their continued support of our organization.
Performance with Cyndi Lauper

Several of Na Lei Hulu's dancers performed "True Colors" during Cyndi
Lauper's show at Club Universe, San Francisco, on May 25, 2002. The
performance was followed by Ms. Lauper's dance version of "True Colors."
Director/Kumu Patrick Makuakāne created this piece in 1997 to honor his
eccentric and well-loved Uncle Emile.
Aloha Mary!

Dancers
from Na Lei Hulu gave a special performance of "I Left My Heart in San
Francisco" for Mary Bitterman (pictured, 2nd from right) during her
farewell luncheon at KQED-TV in February. After over seven years as
KQED's President and CEO, she moved on to become the President and CEO
of the James Irvine Foundation in San Francisco. A warm and spirited
woman, Ms. Bitterman has strong ties to Hawai'i and the Hawaiian
culture. Before KQED, she was the Director of the East-West Center's
Institute of Culture and Communication in Honolulu, the Director of the
Hawaii State Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, and the
Executive Director of the Hawaii Public Broadcasting Authority.
